The IRES Foundation’s National School on Market Regulation was recently held in Chicago, providing a wide range of timely topics ranging from health care reform and regulation at the federal and state levels, to educational sessions prepared with “first timers” in mind. For those new to the coordination of market conduct exams, the School offered an in-depth session on “Best Practices in Coordinating Exams” presented by state regulators and industry personnel. Commissioners of insurance shared key information on the most challenging and important regulatory issues confronting insurance executives today. Various “State Spotlight” sessions allowed attendees the opportunity to learn the latest information from, and ask questions of, market conduct examiners in each state. And those burning issues, or hot topics, sessions were popular as we were provided additional insight on the current events and happenings in the insurance industry.

I was fortunate to be able to attend the MCM professional designation program, which immediately followed April’s Market Regulation School. The Program’s comprehensive content included multiple topics that comprise the market conduct process. Detailed focus was provided on the role of exam management and communication throughout the exam process. Additionally, the writing of required reports, the use of data requests, as well as technology tools available to assist in the exam process were also presented. The forum was a unique opportunity to gain not only valuable insight into this process, but also to share the learning experience with the other Program participants.
